What You Should Know About Screw Compressors And How They Work

compressor

Screw compressors squeeze gas through the use of one or two screw gears. A screw compressor forces gas through the compression chamber through helical surface of two large interlocking screws that rotate. Screw compressors are considered to be very helpful and high efficiency products for a wide variety of applications which include process cooling, standard air conditioning, and temperature control, cold storage refrigeration among other pharmaceutical and environmental applications. The following are some of the very vital parts and screw compressors maintenance tips you should know;

The screw chamber

This system contains a specially designed chamber. It is here that the screw is located. The screw chamber is precisely engineered to very high tolerances so that no gas escapes between the screw and the chamber walls. When the screw compressor is turned on and the screw rotates, gas is let into the chamber. Thereafter, the gas is compressed through the chamber as the screw turns. Once it is compressed, the gas is forced into another chamber which is located below the screw chamber.

Cooling and power

In order for the screw compressors to work, power is supplied to specific motors that turn the screw mechanisms in the screw chambers. Traditionally, this power is either gas powered or electrical powered motors. The other component is the cooling system. This system works to keep the entire unit cool and to disperse heat that is caused as a result of the gas compression. Some screw compressors are oil assisted. This means that oil is pumped into the screw chamber to help in creating a seal. However, other compressors do not use oil to assist in forming the seal. But they use air to cool the screws. But, these compressors do not produce highly compressed gas and they are not as powerful as those that are oil assisted.

In case of a problem with your screw compressor, you can do the following on your own. And if it fails to work, it is advisable to seek help from professionals.

Turn on the compressor

If the compressor fails to activate, it is advisable to switch back to the off position and then inspect the power supply. You can also try tightening the wire connectors at this point as well as the control panel.

Test the compressor to see if it activates

If it fails to activate again, it is advisable for you to replace the circuit breaker. However, this procedure requires skills and proficiency. Therefore, if you have no idea of what it takes yo replace, it is advisable to seek help from a professional.

Inspect all the valves and connections on the compressor

To ensure that the compressor is in a good working condition it is important to inspect all the connections for a complete seal. In case of worn out or cracked screw-on connectors or rubber tubes, it is important to replace them. This is because gas can easily escape through the cracks which will make the compressor to lose pressure thus a malfunction.

In summary, in case you have no idea on how to fix or repair your compressor, it is always a good idea to seek the help of a technician or a professional.
