Modern Diamond Crafting Methods

Crafting a diamond to a high standard is a task that requires great craftsmanship. Many diamonds begin as rough stones, and it is the detailed marking and cutting techniques that makes them the desirable, world-renown items.

Marking

When crafting a diamond the first step is the marking stage. Once a full examination of each rough diamond has been carried out, the stone is marked to decide how it should be cut to yield the greatest value. It is at this stage, the shape of the rough diamond and the number and location of imperfections must be considered.

The marker or planner must determine the direction of the cleavage (or grain) in the diamond. Due to the diamond’s atomic structure, it can be cleaved in four directions parallel to the octahedron crystal faces.

After the marking is completed the diamond moves onto several other stages; beginning with cleaving and cutting and eventually ending with the final finishing.
